Destroyer approved by the German authorities

Posted on | March 8, 2008 | 10 Comments

Me and my friend Oscar Swartz took the car from Prague to deliver several hundred copies of Destroyer 06 to Destroyer’s German distribution central. (Most copies were shipped from Prague yesterday, but since many readers live in Germany, Destroyer is also shipped from there.)

Despite both Germany and the Czech Republic are part of the Schengen Agreement, we were waived to the side by a police car at the border crossing. It was a routine check. The officer asked us if we had any drugs or weapons in the vehicle, and we said we didn’t. Then he searched the car thoroughly with a flashlight. His face didn’t reveal what he thought when he found seven boxes filled with Destroyer Magazine in the trunk.

A male and a female officer joined him. They took a copy of Destroyer with them, along with our passports, to the police car. Oscar and I waited in our car. I was counting the minutes, since I thought every extra minute made the situation more embarrassing for the cops.

After about 20 minutes one of them came back with our passports and the copy of Destroyer that they had borrowed. ”Alles klar!” he said and let us go. All clear!

I retell this little story since I know some readers are afraid that Destroyer walks the line of the law. Now you know it doesn’t.

Academic thesis about Destroyer

Yes, you read right. On February 18th, 2008, this 63-page thesis about Destroyer was published by Stockholm University:

The Beautiful Boy, The Destroyer: Sexradikalers förhandlingar om tidskriften Destroyer – en intervjustudie om anständiga bögar, fula gubbar och sexualiserade barn

The author Reb Kerstinsdotter has interviewed a number of self-proclaimed sex-radicals about their views on the journal. I am interviewed as well. From the abstract:

Through the collection and analysis of negotiations surrounding the gay magazine Destroyer, the intention of this paper is to identify norms of sexuality within a contemporary sex-radical discourse. These negotiations are collected from interviews with individuals whom, at the time of the interview, consider themselves or their politics sex-radical. In order to allow for a more general understanding of the context in which these negotiations have come about, material about Swedish law is also included in this text, together with the interview material, and serves as a base for analysis through the application of Gayle Rubin’s theory on the hierarchical value system of sexuality.

Shirtless teenage boys with sex appeal!

I have to admit I’m no fan of the youtube phenomenon where male friends lipsync to hits for kids and try to look gay. But I like this one. Maybe because they don’t lipsync. Or because I’m in love with one of the guys - won’t say who!
